New Motorists Should Be Tested on Energy-Efficient Driving Says CBI
According to the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) energy-efficient driving should become a mandatory part of the driving test. Smarter driving could save consumers around £250 a year, learners should be able to demonstrate they can drive smoothly and adopt more energy-efficient motoring techniques.
Drivers Able to Claim Back Fines From Rogue Clampers
Motorists who feel they have been overcharged for being clamped will have the right to appeal. Independent tribunals will have the power to limit the fines. Motorists could also claim for out-of pocket expenses such as taxis or hiring another vehicle. Amendments to the Crime and Security bill currently going through Parliament will create a compulsory licensing scheme for all clamping firms.
New Plans to Tackle Uninsured Drivers
New measures to crack down on uninsured drivers were revealed by Road Safety Minister Paul Clark. These will make it an offence to keep an uninsured vehicle – rather than just to drive when uninsured, making it easier to catch uninsured drivers. Under the new system it will mean that the DVLA will work alongside the insurance industry to identify uninsured vehicles. Motorists will receive a letter telling them that their vehicle appears to be uninsured and warn them they will receive a fine. If they fail to insure the car they will receive a £100 fine. If the vehicle remains uninsured it could then be seized and destroyed.
